University general information

Established in 1990, the Universidade de Vigo is a public Spanish university located in Galicia (Northwest Spain). It comprises three campuses, the main one in Vigo, and two more in Pontevedra (30 km from Vigo) and Ourense (95 km from Vigo).

The Universidade de Vigo aims to generate excellent science, train in values of excellence, and contribute to society. In 2020, there were about 20,000 undergraduate and 500+ postgraduate students, 1500+ faculty members and researchers and 800+ administrative and support staff.

The research activity in the Universidade de Vigo is supported by 150+ research groups, which together form four Research Centres and two Clusters: CINBIO (Biomedical Centre), CIM (Marine Centre), AtlanTTIC (Technology of the Information and Communication Centre) and CINTECX (Technologies, Energy and Industrial Processes); ECOBAS (Economics and Business Administration for Society), CITACA (Agro-Food Research).

The research potential has attracted funding from more than 400 European, national and regional projects, receiving 65 million euros over the last 5 years (2015-2019).

The Universidade de Vigo runs the Campus of International Excellence, Campus do Mar, adding to the 3000 researchers and 25 marine research institutions of Spain and Portugal, forming a cross-border network of research and knowledge with the sea as a driving force.

The Universidade de Vigo has also placed a considerable emphasis on R&D activities over recent years. More than 600 R&D activities per year confirm the university’s strong relationship with companies, clusters and public entities in its area of influence, worth more than 5 million euros per year. In the same way, about 15 national and European patent requests have been submitted and 4 spin-offs have been established per year.

Our university has been ranked repeatedly within the 100 best world universities of less than 50 years by The Times Higher Education and listed in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities since 2011.

The Universidade de Vigo follows the European HR strategy of Excellence for Researchers (HRS4R) and the Open, Transparent and Merit-Based recruitment principles.

HR Excellence in Research

In 2017 the Universidade de Vigo was recognised by the European Commission (EC) with the HR Excellence in Research Award and with the Seal of Excellence.
HR Excellence in Research reflects our commitment to continuously improve and make progress in aligning our human resources policies & strategies with the 40 principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter & Code).

The Charter & Code are a set of general principles and requirements for researchers as well as employers and/or funders of researchers. Its implementation by research institutions renders them more attractive to researchers looking for a new employer or for a host for their research project.

The ‘Human Resources Strategy for Researchers’ EC programme supports research institutions and funding organizations in the implementation of the Charter & Code in their policies and practices with the aim of contributing to the consolidation of the European Research Area (ERA) unified and open to the world, based on a market in which researchers, scientific knowledge and technology circulate freely.

The Seal of Excellence is a prestigious endorsement designed to support MSCA outstanding applicants whose proposals show exceptional potential but cannot be funded under the current budget.

We are currently working towards the 4th phase of the process on implementing the HR Strategy & Action Plan 2019-2022
